SPIRA: Music from Final Fantasy X by Materia Collective

Materia Collective has released a new Final Fantasy album called SPIRA, featuring masterfully recreated/reinvented creations of all music from the legendary Final Fantasy X.

Before I go any further, let me preface by saying I am a huge fan of both Final Fantasy X and Materia Collective. I am also loosely associated with one of the masterminds behind Materia Collective, Sebastian Wolff, aka GermanSebass on Youtube, and Co-Founder of Loudr.

I will try my best to use my music judgement discipline acquired during my many years of radio, however being a superfan of what I am writing about may cause some bias.

With all that out of the way, let’s talk about this magical album…

SPIRA is a large-scale collaborative remix project honoring the music from Final Fantasy X. Created by the Materia Collective, SPIRA is divided into two 50-track albums, Zanarkand Mix and Besaid Mix, with almost 3 hours worth of music on each album. Zanarkand Mix features a more contemporary mix of covers, including a wide range of rock and electronic music in addition to some acoustic interpretations, representing Tidus’s journey from Zanarkand through the foreign world of Spira. While the Besaid Mix album features a more natural and acoustic listening experience, with styles ranging from classical to jazz to Bollywood.

After listening to both albums, I have to say that I am very impressed with how tone differences between the two. There is a very distinct difference in mood, ranging from upbeat funky fun time, to slowed down deep thought type of mood. I recommend starting with the album that best correlates with how you currently feel.

Now as I write this, a friggin SOLAR ECLIPSE is happening right above me… brb…

Okay that was epic… Good thing I had a welding helmet handy, jesus that was bright. lulz. Nobody writes crap like this in the middle of their articles. Probably because people actually read them, unlike mine. At least I can get away with stuff like this. Here’s a epic picture I took of my wife and I while looking at it. Ok moving along.

Now if you have not heard of Materia Collective, it’s essentially an independent music label that spawned from a singular album project, MATERIA, a 5 disc album constructed by many of the same musicians who helped create SPIRA. In two years, the success of MATERIA has spawned over 50 high quality gaming albums and mixes. Materia Collective is a very successful, and very, very impressive outfit.

You can purchase and stream SPIRA: Music from Final Fantasy X from iTunes, Bandcamp and Spotify. I’ve included both Bandcamp albums within this article so you lovely people can convince yourselves to buy them. For more information, get it directly from the materiacollective.com website.
