Social media is gross. We all know how toxic it can be. It’s awful, hard, and a big pain in the booty. However, social media marketing is hugely important for the growth of your twitch/mixer/other channel. It gives you the power to interact with your audience, even when you are offline. It gives you the power to have a voice and be heard, whenever you want to be. Social media is a demonstration of your following when your stream goes offline, which has huge value in many ways, including getting partnered with various platforms (they really care about your social media strength).
The amount of people that engage your content in social media is the best way any other organization can quickly size you up. Now to be clear, it’s not followers that they are looking at. It’s how many people comment on your content. That is really hard to fake, and is what anyone that wants real info looks at.
With the importance of social media marketing for content creators out of the way, lets get into what we need to be doing.
The main platforms streamers use for social media are twitter, instagram, snapchat and facebook. If you are not involved in one of these platforms, no matter what your personal feelings are about their existence and use among the population, you need to create an account and start getting involved. This is a huge part your job and it must be done. However, with that said, if you really have strong feelings about one or more of these, it’s not going to cause you to fail if you do not use one. However I highly recommend considering using all 4 platforms for maximum effect.
Effective social media marketing can take a lot of your time, so these essential tools will help speed up the process while simultaneously maximizing results.
Social Media Marketing Tools
- There are many alternatives to the tools listed above, but those are the ones I use for sake of simplicity. If you have better suggestions please list them in the comments below for others to see.
Tweetdeck allows you to use multiple twitter accounts at once, while simultaneously allowing you to schedule multiple tweets to automatically be sent at different times. It’s very straight forward, simple, and free.
Hashtagify, for me, is the most important tool in my social media marketing arsenal. Use Hashtagify to research the most effective hashtags you can use on twitter and instagram. See who the top influences are behind popular hashtags, as well as weekly stats of hashtag performance across the entire platforms. Simply search hashtags that are relevant to your content and let Hashtagify show you all the other most. Creativity goes a long way when searching a starting point.
Consider using @ to tag influences that use the same hashtags as you. Big or small, including other influencers in your tweets often leads to more followers.
We all know how fun a stream is to watch when multiple streamers team up and have good banter. It’s also a good idea to team up with others on social media and begin the practice of social media banter, for your followers to enjoy. Start a fun feud, highlight something cool another streamer did, highlight a streamer that was a part of something cool you did. Be creative and convince the other creators in your circle to work with you. The best deals are made when everyone wins.
A lot of other people have been successfully doing social media marketing a lot longer than you or I have, and their social media posts are on point. Feel free to study them, and even research and steal their well performing hashtags 🙂
Take Your Time
When posting content, take your time. Take the time to take the perfect picture or video edit the perfect clip, and to think about the message that accompanies it. Plan ahead if needed! A good plan, careful construction, and good content will take your social media posts a long way. Lazy uninteresting low quality posts do not.

There are many other marketing platforms streamers should have a presence on and utilize. Most notable being youtube and reddit. Reddit is a sticky subject as self-promotion is strongly discouraged and looked down upon, however the platform is indeed designed to be one of the worlds best marketing platforms. The best way to get the most out of reddit, is to use it. Youtube on the other hand, is a completely different monster, and in fact, is a competitor to twitch. Putting content on youtube can be incredibly time consuming, however you will find that your viewers will very much enjoy seeing a different form of content from you. Reddit and youtube are very time consuming platforms so be careful with how much energy you put into them.
