Final Fantasy IX is now available on Steam! For those who have never played FF9, I highly recommend that you pick it up. It is easily one of the top three best Final Fantasy games in the series, and stands within the original PlayStation era of the franchise, which to many, is a general seal of approval.
For those looking for a challenge, FF9 is one of the most challenging Final Fantasy games out there. Like most FF games, you can grind your way to easy boss battles, but even with high powered characters you will need to implement specific strategies for various situations.
On the downside, there is the card collecting mini-game. When compared to FF8’s Triple Triad, which is easy to understand in terms of rules, the card game in FF9 is overly complex and frustrating. Luckily, however, it has little to do with the story, so don’t dwell on it too much.
While we are speaking of downsides, the new HD characters clash with the non-HD background renders. Oddly HD background renders were not incorporated despite a ton of fans asking for it. Hopefully we will see this in a future patch. Square-Enix is pretty good at remedying problems brought up by PC customers and releasing decent updates.
3 years ago when FF7 was released, it had major issues with sound and music. They incorporated MIDI sound files instead of the higher quality ones found on the PS1, however they since resolved that issue and PC releases have not had problems since.
