Top Ten Impressions From E3 2010

12:09 pm in Top Ten by Stan

E3 2010 has come and gone, but not without leaving some memorable impressions. There was way too much to consume in just a few days time. Reflecting on the last week, there were definitely some announcements that left strong enough impressions. You can bet continued anticipation over the next few months before their release.

While Kinetic and PlayStation Move presented new possibilities for motion-based and immersive gaming, I was really more excited for the visual and technical evolution of 3D on the Nintendo 3DS and some of Sony’s 3D PS3 games. There also proved to be a strong evolution of some long running games and fan favorites. If I had to narrow down the top ten memorable gaming announcements from E3 2010, and what I would want you to keep on your radar, this would be it:

#1 – Nintendo 3DS unveiling and 3DS game lineup

Nintendo’s E3 press conference wrapped up with the unveiling of another feat for the next Nintendo DS. Although eager attendees were only given a couple of minutes with the Nintendo 3DS, the brief showing of Mario, Samus, Link and more Nintendo characters in 3D looked incredible, all without the need of any 3D glasses. Not since the Wii’s debut in 2006 were the lines at Nintendo’s E3 show floor so packed. Backing up the technological marvel is an impressive roster of games for just about anyone. From Zelda to Resident Evil to Metal Gear Solid, big franchises will be supporting the 3DS.

#2 - Dead Space 2 gameplay presentation

How often to you get to sit in on a game demo on Unitologist Church pews? Visceral Games hosted an incredible showing of Dead Space 2 gameplay. The behind doors preview showed one of the most amazing environments in Dead Space 2, a Unitology Church. The gameplay looked solid, audio was intense and yes, it was scary (the attendee next to me jumped). Dead Space 2 is a game you don’t want to miss. If you haven’t played the original Dead Space, you have plenty of time to catch up before the January 25, 2011 release of Dead Space 2 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Watch the official Dead Space 2 website for more.

#3 - Killzone 3 gameplay presented in 3D

Guerrilla Games presented Killzone 3 during Sony’s press conference using RealD 3D glasses. The perspective from a jet pack jumping across icy platforms with embers and snowflakes fluttering by looked astounding. The announcement that the 3D would be coupled with 100% PlayStation Move gameplay compatibility promises that Killzone 3 will be one of the most immerse sci-fi shooters to arrive in 2011.

#4 - The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword announced for Wii

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto unveiled the next Zelda game for the Nintendo Wii to a screaming crowd. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will have improved controls over the original Wii Zelda game and support the Wii Motion Plus, as well as sporting a revamped look. Although the latter part of the demo was marred by technical glitches/interference, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be high on the list of Wii gamers when it is released in 2011.

#5 - Dungeon Siege III behind doors presentation

Behind Square Enix’s E3 booth, Obsidian Entertainment was giving a little peek of its upcoming action-RPG for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, Dungeon Siege III. From what was shown, the graphics, lighting and gameplay all looked like an action-RPGers dream. Hopefully Square Enix and Obsidian Entertainment will bring more screenshots and gameplay footage to the public soon. For now, I can tell you that it’s looking like a richly woven fantasy (filled with loot) that you shouldn’t miss, regardless if you’ve played any of the games in the Dungeon Siege series.

#6 - Twisted Metal announced for PlayStation 3

Just before the conclusion of Sony’s E3 Press Conference, the big guns were rolled out on one of Sony’s beloved car combat franchises, Twisted Metal. Rolling out on stage in Sweet Tooth’s ride, David Jaffe finally came clean and gave a demo of the Twisted Metal PS3 game from Eat Sleep Play. Prepare for multiplayer mayhem in this much anticipated PS3 game.

#7 – Project Natal gets official Kinect name and game lineup announced

Kinect, the Xbox 360 motion sensor formerly known as “Project Natal,” finally was named. Although the price wasn’t announced during the press conference, retailers have placed the price tag at $149.99 at the beefed-up looking (and performing) Wii Sensor Bar. Microsoft’s E3 Kinect game demo during the press conference felt very much like a Nintendo family-friendly motion gaming pitch. There were a couple of Kinect games announced that looked like they could be fun for seasoned gamers, such as the tentatively titled “Forza Kinect” and “Star Wars Kinect.

#8 – Gabe Newell’s Portal 2 PlayStation 3 announcement at Sony E3 Press Conference

Valve Software’s Gabe Newell made a surprise showing at Sony’s E3 Press Conference. Those familiar with Gabe Newell’s outspoken criticism of the PlayStation 3 were probably most surprised with his on-stage appearance. This was to make the announcement thatPortal 2 on the PlayStation 3 would be the “best version,” which he confirmed would have Steam Cloud support on the PS3.

#9 - GoldenEye 007 announced for Wii

Nintendo Wii gamers clearly got some of the most fan service, including this announcement for GoldenEye on the Wii. The first-person shooter makes a return, exclusively to Nintendo’s Wii system, from Activision. With multiplayer support, others will fear you as Jaws.

#10 – Xbox 360 Hardware redesign and freebie for Microsoft E3 press conference attendees

Microsoft unveiled a new Xbox 360, which received a face-lift and a scaled down footprint. Ditched are the interchangeable faceplates in favor of a sleeker and glossy look that pays homage to the original Xbox. With built in WiFi and 250GB, hopefully this new Xbox 360 hardware proves bulletproof to the infamous red ring of death.  Media, enthusiasts and others who attended Microsoft’s E3 press conference were given the new Xbox 360 system. This would lead to hopes that other press conferences would give away hardware gaming swag, as demonstrated by someone sitting next to me at Nintendo’s E3 press conference. Alas, after he hastily patted down his seat following the Nintendo 3DS unveiling, we would soon find out it was not to be. And that leads us back to the #1 anticipated E3 announcement, the Nintendo 3DS.

Top Ten Hardest Bosses

12:50 am in Top Ten by Stan

Game Rebel Networks list on the ten hardest bosses we have ever faced in video games. This is based off of much of our own research and opinions. If you feel there’s another boss that should be on this list, feel free to shout out.

Each boss that we have listed comes with a youtube video of the boss battle, feel free to enjoy and remember some of the old memories of the these old boss battles.

10:Ruby/Emerald weapon.(Final Fantasy VII)

Even at level 99 you can die in an instant. Just like dealing with your girlfriend when her aunt flow is in town, one wrong move gets you pwned in a heartbeat.

Square Enix (originally Squaresoft) really knows how to beat you down, even when you’ve earned a sword that could probably kick your own ass. Man, we really can’t control what we find awesome. We just find this fight amazingly awesome… and you will pay for it dearly.

Unless you’re the guy in this video, all the Hero Drinks in the world won’t save you from this.

9. Zeus (God Of War II)

God of War III obviously blew II out of the water in graphics and gameplay, but no boss battle in the series has ever been harder than Zeus.

Zeus is, well, the God of all Gods – so he pretty much SHOULD be this hard to beat.

The biggest problem with Zeus is that every time you turn around he’s completely healed. The gory cut scene at the end is well worth the battle, though. Keep going, my friends. Keep going. Remember those hot chicks you bang at the beginning of the franchise? Do it for them.

Make Zeus your bitch… this is probably the most worthwhile boss to actually invest time in on this list.

8.Wizpig (Diddy Kong Racing)

Wizpig or as I like to call him Wiz Bitch! Is a bastard. He’s a real bastard and he knows it. Look at him! This freaking ass piglet cheats in the begining.. HE CHEATS!! Why does he need to cheat anyways.. He can fly! And he’s fast as sonic on steroids! It’s not fair. I cried many of times trying to beat this purple laced fruitcake when I was a kid. And I still cant beat him! So Ican’t even have closure. Wizpig will be on my plate for thanksgiving.

7.Vergil (Devil May Cry 3)

So yeah this game was originally so hard… They had to make a directors cut that had an easy mode…. And it got a greatest hit where the original didn’t. So if your even skilled enough to make it to the end of this game… Pray that you collected and upgraded your items just enough to go toe to toe with this brother from HELL. Because Vergil is no joke. Prepare yourself for complete frustration.

6.Lu Bu (Dynasty Warriors Series)

The fact that he swings around a 50 pound halbert like a twig, toppled with the fact that he is an actual person of ancient china, oh man. Lu bu is a Powerhouse. Lu Bu = EPIC. I know what some of you are thinking “man I pwned Lu Bu after I maxed out my character” well.. Try that again on chaos. Yea you will DIE! Lu Bu is so tough at the battle of Hu Lao Gate (the second level in the game!), to beat the level you have to avoid him! That’s right to win you don’t fight Lu Bu. And if you ever are bold enough to fight him with a level one character… When you hit him. He doesn’t budge. That’s right he just looks at you while you swing away and his hits don’t even affect him! And the worse part is, 1 hit, your dead. If not two. And he’s hard if he hits you with his horse.. Thats right his horse, he knocks out 2/3 of your health.

5.Mike Tyson (Mike Tysons Punchout)

Notably one of the hardest bosses on the NES “Nintendo Entertainment System”.

This man in reality, will knock your ass out in a heartbeats time, and the same follows with the game. We all know that NES games where some of the most difficult games to beat, but most know that Mike Tysons Puchout was one of the hardest.

To this day, Mike Tyson remains one the hardest final bosses of all time. Claiming victory leaves you more viable to be called a liar or cheater than a winner.

4.Lavos (Chrono Trigger)

The final conflict of time-hopping adventure Chrono Trigger carries with it an unusual sense of urgency, because you’re literally trying to stop the end of the world — an apocalypse whose results you’ve already seen by traveling into the future to witness what will happen if you lose. Part monster, part Xenu-like alien astronaut, final boss Lavos is a hungry planet-eating parasite whose plans for dessert consist of annihilating humanity. No matter how you approach the fiend — either by approaching on foot and taking it on the hard way or by simply smashing through its outer shell with your time machine — the final showdown is a devious trick battle against a strange humanoid creature with the seeming ability to return from death. The fight ultimately spans the whole of time and space, with impressively tense music serving as a reminder of the enormous stakes of the outcome.

3.Sephiroth (Kingdom Hearts)

Sephiroth. One hit from him can knock you down to 1hp (hit points). What the hell is that?! The entire time his hp is higher than Snoop Dog on 420 day.

Unless you build up your HP throughout the entire game and basically don’t relent on doing things like “finishing the level in a timely manner”, you’re going to have a record-breaking crap time trying to beat him when it really comes down to it.

2.Sephiroth…again (Final Fantasy VII)

I was debating on whether or not I should make this number one or number two. And that was extremely hard for me due to the fact that FF7 is my ALL TIME favorite game (hence my gamer name being “Cloud”). Sephy is a very difficult boss due to the fact that you need to defeat over TEN bosses straight with no break before you beat the game… The first set of bosses are relatively easy due to the fact that you should be powered up pretty decently at this point. But when you get to the several different forms of Sephy, you are in for a run for your money. HARRRRRD!!!

1: The HAG (Banjo-Tooie)

Variety of attacks: A large amount of attacks. Speed of Grunty’s spells is lower if you get a question correct, but is always fast in the final stage of the battle.

Annoying: VERY High, mainly due to the fact that her spells become very hard to dodge later in the battle.

This thing has immense HP, a huge variety of attacks, and what do you have? a few honeycombs worth of life, and maybe cheats. Without cheats, this is probably the most frustrating thing I have ever faced. Especially in Replay Mode… no cheats and only 5 honeycombs!!! This thing isn’t THAT hard with good dodging, but beating it in replay mode could take a LONG time, hence why it’s #1.

Second Opinion 1: Bowser (Any Mario Game)

Name one other boss that you can kill more than 50 times and he’s still alive.

Top Ten Annoying Enemies

11:36 am in Top Ten by Stan

10. Lakitus – (Mario Series)

Dont you just hate this guy? He is like a booger that you cant get off your finger. Aside from consistently following you, he is tossing Spinys at you and occasionally taunting you with an extra life on a fishing line. This guy is a jerk.

9. Mimics – (Many RPG’s)

These guys are just plain out a**holes. They disguise themselves as treasure chests to lure you over to hopefully discover some useful goodies that will aid you in your quest, and BAM! You have gotten ambushed, and now have to fight this menace.

8. Malboros – (Final Fantasy Series)

These nasty looking plant like creatures can cause plenty of heartache to your party with a multitude of status effects. The most frequent and annoying attack from these guys is the Bad Breath attack, which can render your whole party useless in seconds.

7. Jackel Snipers – (Halo Series)

Doesnt it just really annoy you when your playing on legendary and those skinny little jackal sniper buggers take you out. Its worse on outskirts! I think that they should have made it to where one shot will take your whole shield down, and another will be a kill shot.

6. Hunters – (Resident Evil)

Terrifying but ultimately annoying, the Hunters from the first Resident Evil are downright infamous for their cheap combat tactics. When you hear that sinisterclick click click coming from around the corner, you know you’re about to be decapitated by the Hunter’s lunge attack. Did we mention that one-hit kills suck?

5. Wallmasters – (Legend of Zelda Series)

Wallmasters can be found in many Zelda Games but are most well known in Ocarina of Time. Wallmasters are monstrous hands that hang from the walls and ceilings of dungeons and try to grab Link. If they grab him, he is taken back to the beginning of the dungeon, making them one of the most annoying enemies in the series. It is also thought to be one of the more sinister and creepier enemies of the series.

4. Headcrabs – (Half Life 2)

These ferocious little crustaceans have returned from the original game. Essentially the same creature, headcrabs have evolved since the we first saw them, now coming in Fast and Poison varieties. They no longer simply wait in tunnels to spring out at you, Headcrabs are found everywhere, and have even overtaken the village of Ravenholm, being used as a biological weapon by the Combine and launched into populated areas.

3. Cliff Racers – (Morrowind)

They are very annoying and aggressive and will attack anyone in sight. Cliff Racers have good vision range, and will often detect and follow the player without being noticed. This can result in swarms of them descending upon the unwary adventurer. The development team has admitted the sheer amount of cliff racers in the game was a mistake. In Oblivion, Jiub is said to have driven the Cliff Racers off the island and was made a saint because of it. And believe me kids, he is a saint… KAWW KAWW KAWW

2. Dogs – (Call of Duty: Word at War Multiplayer)

Dogs. They are a horrendous idea on Treyarch’s part. Not that it isn’t realistic, but it kills a little fun for the more realistic experience. On certain maps, like Hangar, Castle and Seelow, dogs are a fair gameplay mechanic as you can easily see them coming and combat them properly. However, on small maps like Dome, they are simply an unfair advantage. You can’t hide, can’t fight and can’t really even run away due to the fact that even with a tiny amount of latency a dogs head is actually a foot or so in front of were you will see it.

1. Online Gamers – (Multiplayer Games)

Yep, the number 1 most annoying enemy to face in video games are other gamers them selves. You will meet all types of people online that have the tool of being anonymous and rude.  Racism, gay references, spam, language, name calling, hate, high pitched voices, temper tantrums, team killing, power tripped admins, stupid server rules… These are just the icing of the cake baby. And you all know what I am talking about.
