Up To Date: The five best iPad arcade games

The iPad is a great gaming device, and it’s no wonder that there are a multitude of games to choose from in the iTunes App Store. I love all kinds of games, but these five arcade-style games are among the best.
You can never go wrong with a good game of pinball, and Pinball HD ($2.99) is a beautiful representation of the game. Choose from Wild West, jungle or ocean themes. The controls are simple—just tap on the right or left of the screen to engage the flippers. Players can toggle the view to remain in full-screen portrait view, or to automatically tilt the view and focus in on parts of the table, following the ball. This can make you dizzy if you play too long, but it does add to the action a bit.
I’m absolutely addicted to Snail Mail for iPad ($4.99). Tilt your iPad to navigate Turbo the Snail along an intergalactic highway. Collect mail and deliver it to its destination while gathering power-ups, avoiding holes and various blockades, and shooting monsters. There’s multi-player mode, and even two- or four-player split-screen action.
Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Edition for iPad ($9.99) is pricey, but it’s loads of fun. It’s like Snail Mail, but way more challenging; SMB2 takes advantage of the iPad’s accelerometer to allow players to control the game by moving the device. Wind your monkey through lots of different levels, collecting and avoiding as you go. There are also some mini-games, and least one of which allows for four players to play at once on the same iPad.
Though its name is almost absurdly long, Super Jetpack Dragon IV: Village Burntopia HD ($1.99) is a great game for the price. Cruise your dragon along a course of destruction, burning and pillaging and collecting items as you go. Breathe fire on a village and hear the screams of the villagers. It’s morbid, but I giggle a little every time. The graphics aren’t complicated, but they are full HD. The music is pretty groovy, too. Global scores are maintained on a Plus+ account.
I’ve been hooked on space-shooter games every since the days of Space Invaders. Guide a little ship through space while shooting attackers and collecting power-ups in Nano Fighter for iPad ($1.99). It’s definitely a challenge to master the controls of (you must control the direction of the ship with the left thumb, and shoot with the right thumb), but once I got the hang of it, I was shooting and exploding things all over the universe. Scores are maintained locally or online.
Side note: I would have loved to have included PacMan for iPad ($4.99) in this list. But it stinks. Controls are difficult, even with the option of choosing between controlling by swipe or with a “joystick” on the screen. Don’t waste your money.
